Guide to Hawaii Beaches: Kapoha Tide PoolsSee a driving map and guide to Hawaii: Big Island Driving Map
First time to visit the Big Island? Then read: Go Hawaii or read Lisa's And Hawaii0) CAR RENTAL - It's not accommodation, but sometimes you can spend more on renting a car (including auto rental insurance coverage) than for either airfare or accommodation. My caretaker owns 3 vans for their guided tour business. They can also rent their vans. Contact Majestic Island Tours for more info (tell them Mr. Brooks recommended you to call).
1) NO LONGER IN BUSINESS <<-- Volkswagen Westfalia Camper Rentals in Hawaii
Since you would likely need a rental car anyway, you might think about renting a camping caravan for a week of your trip. NOTE: This company is no longer renting VW campers; however, the guy is in the auto repair business (and he was trying to sell VW vans (back in March 2009), He may know where you can rent or buy one.
2) Camping
There are two kinds of public campgrounds:
State-run (reservations in advance can only be made by mail or in person)

County-run (reservations in advance can be made online)

3) One interesting resort in the same area is Kalani Oceanside Resort. See http://www.kalani.com
There are several types of accommodations including bungalows and camping.
4) You can find other vacation rentals on sites such as VRBO and HomeAway.
5) There are some hostels in Hilo and Kailua-Kona, as well as some bed and breakfast inns around the island.
